Independent Poll Shows Dead Heat in Race for Mayor

08/17/2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An independent poll released today by Public Policy Polling confirms that a race between Anthony Foxx and John Lassiter for Mayor of Charlotte is a statistical dead heat.

The survey on the contest finds Republican John Lassiter holds a statistically insignificant 44-43 lead over Democrat Anthony Foxx in the race to become the next mayor of Charlotte.

"Either we have been right all along and this race continues to be a dead heat or our investment in a grassroots field operation has eliminated a 16 point margin claimed by the Lassiter campaign just two weeks ago," said Anthony Foxx for Mayor Campaign Manager Bruce Clark.

The poll was conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP), a nationally-respected Raleigh-based firm. A Wall Street Journal analysis of swing state polls in the 2008 election showed PPP as one of the two most accurate polling companies in the country.

Full details of the poll can be accessed at www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_Charlotte_817.pdf

A blog on the PPP website states that Anthony Foxx leads John Lassiter 59-30 with Democrats who approve of Pat McCrory's job performance. "Those folks made McCrory's long tenure as the Republican mayor of a Democratic city possible, and could be the swing voters who determine the winner this fall," it goes on to say.

Charlotte native Anthony Foxx has been a member of Charlotte city council since 2005 and currently is running for mayor. He is a graduate of Davidson College, where he served as student body president and was a Root-Tilden-Snow Public Interest Law Scholar at New York University. He and wife Samara have two young children. Visit www.anthonyfoxx.com for more information.
