CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at-large Charlotte City Councilman Anthony Foxx will file to become the first democratic mayor in Charlotte in more than 18 years Filing opened Monday, July 6 and will close at noon on Friday, July 17.
"This will make it official," Foxx said. "I started this effort last October among my inner circles of family and friends and launched the campaign publicly on April 16 but now we’re moving into high gear."
In his four years on Charlotte City Council, Anthony has been a strong advocate for increased police officers on the street, improved roads and transportation and providing a conducive environment in which small businesses can thrive.
"Tough times demand tough leadership and Charlotte is facing its toughest challenges in decades," Foxx said. "More of the same simply is not enough. I will be a mayor who will put Charlotte first and fight for a brighter future."
He will be accompanied by a crowd of supporters to file at noon at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, 741 Kenilworth Avenue, Suite 202 in Charlotte. He will hold a brief announcement upon completion of his filing.
Foxx has a proven record of putting Charlotte first. He has helped re-align the City of Charlotte economic development efforts from an exclusive focus on Center City to an expanded focus on the entire city. His neighborhood-based approach to economic development reaches out to the northeast along Beatties Ford Road, to the west in the Freedom Drive area and towards the University City area along North Tryon Street.
Charlotte native Anthony Foxx has been a member of Charlotte city council since 2005 and currently is running for mayor.
