Foxx Helps Recover $4.7 Million for Schools

05/27/2009

CHARLOTTE, NC - Two weeks after City Councilman Anthony Foxx urged council to release $4.7 million dollars from the SafeLight program to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system, the council voted unanimously
to do so.

Foxx has reached out to leaders on both the county commission and the school board encouraging them to use this money to keep effective teachers.

“Keeping effective teachers is a community priority. The city council vote was not only an important step towards that goal but a critical demonstration of how collaboration across governmental bodies can make a positive impact. As a product the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and a family of educators, I know the value of a good teacher." Foxx said.

He remains confident that the funds will be provided in addition to the board’s current budget. Foxx expressed appreciation to his fellow council members, Mecklenburg County Chair Jennifer Roberts, Vice Chair Harold Cogdell and other commissioners for their efforts to ensure that the city dollars remain with the school system.
