The Vision
- Increase jobs by recruiting corporate headquarters to Charlotte and expanding existing headquarters.
- Expand the use of small businesses in the City of Charlotte to promote stronger job growth.
- Expand incentives to recruit companies to the Charlotte region.
- Grow emerging industries like clean energy, biotechnology, amateur sports and film.
- Create a city-backed loan pool to promote entrepreneurship for displaced workers.
- Organize an annual conference to bring together venture capitalists and emerging businesses.
- Establish a regional coalition of mayors to increase cooperation on economic development, air quality improvements, transportation advocacy and land use strategies.
The Record
- Led creation and implementation of a broad community economic development strategy that is transforming Beatties Ford Road, Rozzelles Ferry Road, Bryant Park/Freedom Drive, Eastland Mall and North Tryon Street, simultaneously growing Charlotte’s overall tax base, improving quality of life and diversifying our economy.
- Strengthened and expanded opportunities for small businesses through the city of Charlotte Small Business Enterprise Program.
- Strong record of fighting for greater use of small businesses in city contracts and transactions.
- Led the charge to create Greenway Business Park and land options on Eastland Mall.
- Strongly supported incentive grants to expand job growth in Charlotte, including recent incentives to bring GMAC, Siemens and Toshiba.
- Strong record of pushing for city-led environmental improvements that grow demand for green jobs.
- Fought to support efforts to bring prospective television and film projects to Charlotte.

- Ended years of neglect to public safety and transportation needs in Charlotte by pushing to hire police officers and build roads.
- Led effort to expand Charlotte’s economic development focus to include its neighborhoods and corridors and create the Business Corridor Revitalization Plan.
- Strongly opposed developments that threatened to overwhelm Charlotte schools and roads.
- Pushed Charlotte City Council to release $4.7 million dollars in CMS funds to prevent layoffs of effective educators.
- Fought to increase afterschool, youth employment and mentoring programs.
- Cast lone vote in favor of LEED certification for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
- Urged the City of Charlotte to reduce greenhouse emissions.
- Consistent advocate for expanding support of Housing Trust Fund and using public- private partnerships to address the growing shortage in affordable housing.

The Record
- Pushed for regional governor’s office in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.
- As chair of Transportation Committee, worked regularly with regional elected officials on the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization (MUMPO) on transportation priorities and building strong regional relationships.
- Led the effort to construct the first privately financed road improvement project in Mecklenburg County.
- Solid record of cultivating relationships with other elected leaders beneficial to the interests of Charlotte.
